Guilty Pleasure

The warm golden tones, shameless beauty, and sensuality that coat Gucci’s perfume advertisement entice the observer to want to buy their perfume. The golden hue of the photograph mimics that of the perfume bottle, subconsciously creating the idea that the perfume is the image, and the image is the perfume. By this, the advertisement further suggests that while wearing “Gucci Guilty” perfume, one will have an experience similar to the models. Both models appear to be in peak physical condition; they are young, active, and flawlessly beautiful. There is also a sensual element to the photo. The man and women are boldly entwined in what is clearly a romantic manner. Part of the bold sexuality in the photo is the power that appears to be given to the female model; she has her hand clasped around the man, and she is positioned above him, giving the illusion that “Gucci Guilty” will give its wearer dominance over the opposite sex. The man’s expression shows he is completely captivated by her smell, and the way his eyes are closed further demonstrates his focus on and attraction to her sent. Sexuality sells, so the promising and exciting love life associated with wearing Gucci’s perfume is attractive to most of their audience. The golden Gucci bracelet on the female model’s arm further intertwines the concept of the beautiful models and the Gucci brand- they are one and the same, and having one will equal the other. There is an exhilarating life of beauty, glamour, romance and power that this Gucci poster promises it’s wearers, and the choices of colors, models, and positioning cohesively work together to successfully portray this promise.

  1. Caroline- I think you did a great job in describing all aspects of the picture and paying very close attention to detail. I would have never noticed the bracelet the model was wearing if you had not pointed it out!
