Don't Be an Egghead

This iconic advertisement cleverly utilizes an easily understood analogy to graphically illustrate the negative effects of drug abuse. The key to the strength of this image lies in its use of recognizable components. An egg is an immediately identifiable object; by presenting it as “the brain,” the advertisement draws a parallel between the easily breakable nature of an egg and the similarly fragile brain. By literally frying this “brain,” the image clearly and concisely demonstrates the drastic changes undergone by the brain when subjected to drug abuse.

The final question phrased by the advertisement, “Any questions?” is subtly facetious, suggesting that anyone who would further challenge the portrayed effects of drugs on the brain is naïve and deluded. There are no further questions, because the blunt imagery of the commercial silences any lingering doubts about the brain’s reaction to substance abuse. Through its clear, straightforward images and dramatic analogy, this advertisement effectively conveys its intended message regarding drug abuse.

  1. I really liked Annie's analysis. I thought it was very clear and cogent and that her sentences flowed very nicely. I thought her rhetorical analysis of the PSA was spot on as well.
